Gabriel Cardoso Oliveira

Sustainability turned into margin, supply security and climate resilience in coffee farming.

Sustainable Coffee Consultant at Wolthers & Associates, supporting Nespresso Plan farms in adopting regenerative agriculture.

About

From the coffee plot to the value chain

I work alongside arabica coffee growers to structure the transition to sustainable, profitable practices: efficient use of chemical inputs, biological control, organic fertilization, composting, cover crops, agroforestry and soil health monitoring.

My focus goes beyond technical assistance. I design systems that raise growers' margins, reduce climate risk and give coffee buyers a predictable supply.

Sustainability measured in bags and margin

A side-by-side comparison in the same coffee plot between a biological inputs program and the farm's standard management, over two harvests.

Biologicals vs. farm standard

Arabica coffee, cultivar IBC-12, 3.75 × 0.5 m spacing, Cerrado Mineiro. Monitored with soil biology tests, leaf analysis with DRIS, NDVI imagery, growth assessments and harvest of 30 plants per treatment, with processing of the samples.

BiologicalsFarm standard
  • Living soil: higher average Trichoderma and lower Fusarium in the soil over both harvests.
  • Nematodes: fewer harmful nematodes, with more free-living (beneficial) ones.
  • Growth: in 2025/26, productive branches grew 28% longer (6.7 vs. 5.3 cm) with 39% more internodes.

Margin based on a coffee price of BRL 1,500 per 60-kg bag and a treatment cost of BRL 665/ha per year. Grower, farm and product names withheld for confidentiality.

Expertise

What I do

Regenerative management

Cover crops, organic fertilization, biological control and fewer harmful chemicals, with an action plan for each farm.

Soil health and indicators

Field diagnosis, visual soil structure assessment, georeferenced sampling points and chemical and biological indicators.

Agroforestry

Design of shaded coffee systems and studies on microclimate, yield and quality with partner universities.

Certification and traceability

Sustainability programs, social and environmental certifications and KPI tracking for access to premium markets.

Grower relations

Field days, training and communication between growers, technical teams and the buyer's global team.

In the field

Practices I support on coffee farms

Adoption is driven by three factors: regulation, market and profitability. This is what it looks like on the ground.

Talks and field days

Agronomy and Sustainability: is it possible?

A talk for students and professionals on careers in agricultural sustainability, built on real cases from coffee farming.

  • How English, communication, regional knowledge and project management open doors in the sector.
  • Real job openings in coffee sustainability that show the market exists.

Sustainability is not only good for nature or for people. It is what keeps the business resilient in the long run.
